Spectroscopic sensing is a powerful modality for numerous applications in medicine, biotechnology and structural health monitoring. Often the implementation is bulky or costly, which is a barrier for high volume markets. Integrated photonics - in particular silicon and silicon nitride photonics - is changing this and will boost spectroscopic sensing to such markets, for example in personalized medicine.
