RARE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN PENILE SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA AND PARATHYROID RELATED PEPTIDE (PTH-rP) SECRETION: THE IMPORTANCE OF PREVENTING TUMOR INFECTION FOR A BETTER PROGNOSIS

2014
We reportona rare case of an adult with severe hypercalcemia secondary to the ectopic secretion of parathyroid-related peptide (PTH-rP) for penile squamous cell cancer (PC), which due to the largetumor extension and seriousinfectionat the samelocation, presented limited treatment options. A patient of 47 years old was admitted with warty lesions and areas of ulceration covered by purulent material in a large area of thegroin, scrotum and penis. Initial laboratory tests revealed severehypercalcemia and elevation of PTH-rP; the biopsy reported PC.Hypercalcemia was successfullytreated with zoledronic acid. However, the tumor displayed aggressive behavior, combined with tumor infection, whichresulted in a poor prognosis for the patient.
