Influencesive of Loading Directions on Compressive Strength of Frozen Silt with Layered Structures

2007
The compressive strength tests were performed on frozen silt with layered structure under loading vertical and parallel to ice layer with various temperatures and strain rates. The results show that the relationships of stress and strain are visco-elastoplastic for load vertical to ice layer, and those are elastoplastic for load parallel to ice layer. The strength and failure strain of frozen soil for the load vertical to ice layer are higher than that for the load parallel to ice layer. The difference degree of strengths is independent of the temperature and strain rate, while that of failure strains increases with the decreasing of strain rates. The failure mode of frozen silt with layered structures is mainly controlled by segregating ice.And the damage evolution is remarkably different with different loading directions.
