Diabetes in Pregnancy

Diabetes in pregnancy is classified into gestational diabetes (GDM), which is the hyperglycemia first detected during pregnancy due to physiological changes caused by pregnancy, and pregestational diabetes, in which a patient with diabetes became pregnant. As the prevalence of diabetes and obesity is increasing rapidly, type 2 diabetes is also increasing in women of childbearing age. The clinical significance of diabetes in pregnancy is that it is deeply associated with obstetric and perinatal complications, including maternal stroke in pregnancy. In addition, diabetes in pregnancy is also associated with cardiovascular disease and stroke later in life. Therefore, it is important to prevent complications to the fetus and mother by controlling blood glucose appropriately during and after pregnancy.
