Insulin is the most effective pharmacotherapy to control blood glucose in patients with diabetes. However, the risk of hypoglycaemia remains an important concern for both prescribing physicians and patients and is one of the most important barriers to optimal glycaemic control. Severe hypoglycaemic episodes may be associated with confusion and loss of consciousness, and can be fatal.
