Payer's Perceptions of Glucagon Kits Aimed at Reducing Administration Complexity During Severe Hypoglycemic Events

2014
Historical focus in diabetes care has been on reduction of hyperglycemia to achieve a target Hba1c level. Newer emphasis on “time in range” versus a single mean blood glucose level involves an extreme-eliminating balance in blood glucose levels, both high and low. Diabetologists recognize that treating to target involves an intricate personalized balance. One might infer that products clearly aimed at mitigating hypoglycemia would be readily adopted by payers and providers. We present primary research on introduction of such a product to test that hypothesis and provide insight into present challenges to the adoption of optimal diabetes care. The product is a new glucagon rescue kit that aims to ease the administration burden by reducing its complexity, increase successful use, and lower rates of healthcare service utilization.
